We’d like to thank our customers who have taken the time to contact us and express their feedback on their experience with Griffin Mill Garages.

Here’s a recent message we received with glowing praise for one of our salesmen, Nick Parry. If you’d like to contribute a message please contact us.

Mr Evans, a very happy Griffin Mill customer:

‘I wish to commend one of your staff Mr Nick Parry on the excellent service he provides at all times to your customers. I have just purchased my 6th Car with Griffin Mill, and with the current financial situation in the country this is a big achievement by your company, with your competitors offering very attractive deals.

I research all other dealers in South Wales and indeed West of England before purchasing a car, and time after time I cannot fault Nick’s knowledge and honesty.

I am a manager myself and acknowledge how important good trustworthy staff are and how the the company is portrayed to highest level. Nick certainly does this time after time.

I trust you will congratulate Nick on his achievement in this very difficult market and I wish I had a member of staff like Nick in my team.’

Next Generation Rio

Next generation Rio marks next big step in Kia’s design revolution

The first official sketches of the next generation Kia Rio revealed today show a powerful, bold design that marks “the next big step” in the company’s ongoing design revolution.

Longer, lower and wider than the existing Rio, the new model is designed to inject emotional appeal into the B-segment, targeting progressive, energetic consumers who want a stand-out design.

Described by Kia’s Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer, as ‘sporty and elegant’, the B-segment newcomer has a swept-back profile and a character line rising out of the front wheel which gives it a sense of movement and fluidity, even when stationary. Inside, new Rio will offer a feeling of quality typically associated with larger, more expensive models.

“Downsizing is becoming more and more of a trend these days and a B-segment car as attractive as all-new Rio, with its driver-oriented cabin and interior trim options, will no doubt help consumers to be more comfortable making that switch. New Rio is the ‘next big step’ in Kia’s design revolution and we anticipate this model becoming even more popular than the current vehicle,” comments Soon-Nam Lee, Director of Overseas Marketing, Kia Motors Corporation.

The new Kia Rio will make its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show on Tuesday, March 1 2011.The current Kia Rio was the company’s third best-selling vehicle in overseas markets during 2010 with sales of more than 205,000 units.

Ponty’s Pink shirt is a winner both on and off the pitch

Over a 100 guests attended the official launch of Pontypridd RFC’s limited edition pink rugby shirt on Friday at the Griffin Mill dealership in Treforest.

Players, club members, fans and guests of Griffin Mill joined together to watch the Wales versus Fiji international on a large TV screen in the main showroom.

The new shirt has been launched to help Ponty raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Fundraising during the evening and at other events including their home match against Newport on Saturday has already amassed a grand total of over £600 with further donations expected.

When approached by Pontypridd RFC about hosting the event at Griffin Mill Garages, Anthony Griffin, managing director was keen to be involved. Explaining why, he said, “When Griffin Mill was invited to host the pink shirt launch event we immediately accepted. Macmillan Cancer Support is a fantastic charity, we have developed an excellent working relationship with Pontypridd RFC and our showroom is ideal for such a function. We are both local businesses and it makes sense to work together.”

Gareth Howells, commercial director of Pontypridd RFC was delighted by the amount raised at the events. He said, “We’ve had a very successful launch for our pink shirt. Griffin Mill generously hosted force all for a great cause. At the match on Saturday, the players wore the shirts for the first time and club members armed with buckets gratefully received donations from the fans.”

Two Kia models awarded top Euro NCAP honours

  • Kia Sportage and Venga awarded 5-star safety rating by Euro NCAP
  • Korean brand continues to demonstrate commitment to vehicle safety
  • Both models available with a host of active and passive safety features

Two of Kia’s latest vehicles, Sportage and Venga, have both been awarded the top 5-star safety rating by leading independent European safety organisation, Euro NCAP.

The Kia Sportage crossover and Venga B-segment MPV were both given the maximum 5-star rating, placing them at the top of their respective classes and in the distinguished company of other Kia models such as the Soul, cee’d and Sorento.

Kia Sportage obtained scores of 93 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection, 86 per cent for Child Occupant protection, 49 per cent for Pedestrian Protection and 86 per cent for Safety Assist.  Venga scored 89, 85, 64 and 71 respectively, in the same categories.

Sportage and Venga also received praise for having Electronic Stability Control (ESC) fitted as standard in most markets.  “These latest results from Euro NCAP highlight Kia’s commitment to ensuring exceptional levels of safety in its vehicles,” commented Benny Oeyen, Vice-President, Marketing & Product Planning, Kia Motors Europe.

“In the first instance, Kia’s engineers strive to design vehicles that make it easier for drivers to avoid hazards, thanks to good visibility, powerful braking and excellent road holding.  However, in the event that an accident is unavoidable, Kia owners also have peace of mind that they and their passengers are protected by the very best passive safety technology,” Oeyen concluded.

The Kia Venga was originally tested in early 2010 and was awarded a four-star rating.  Not content with a less-than-perfect score, Kia’s engineers subsequently made a number of minor changes to the car and brought Venga back to Euro NCAP for retesting.  The revised model specification, which entered production in September 2010, performed strongly in all test areas to secure the maximum 5-star rating.

All Vengas sold in Europe offer buyers ABS with Brake Assist System (BAS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Hill Assist Control (HAC), six airbags (dual front, side and full-length curtain), front passenger airbag cut-off switch, active front head rests, all-round three-point seatbelts with front-belt pre-tensioners and reminder warning, ISOFIX child seat top tethers and anchors and impact-sensing auto door unlocking.

Sportage buyers will find front, side and full-length curtain airbags with rollover sensor, front passenger airbag cut-off switch, active headrests, ABS, EBD, ESC with Downhill Brake Control (DBC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), adaptive brake lights, all-round three-point seatbelts with front-belt pre-tensioners and load-limiters and ISOFIX child seat top tethers and anchor fixings all as standard across the European model range.

A Lot to Toot About!

A Lot to Toot About

Children with Vuvuzela horns.

We were delighted to lend out support to LittleFolk Day Nursery and make a contribution towards the transformation of their outdoor play area.

Allyson Harding of LittleFolk and her team have worked tirelessly to make the play area a fun and safe place for the children they look after and in doing so enlisted the support of local businesses.

Much to the delight of the children and not so much of the parents, we went to the opening of the play area with KIA World Cup goodies including the now infamous Vuvuzelas!

The persistent tooting heralded the opening and we would like to wish Allyson and all the team at LittleFolk every success for the future.

Kia to supply Top Gear with Reasonably Priced cee’d

Kia cee'd available from Griffin Mill
Kia has made it on to Top Gear. The Korean company has provided three examples of its Golf-sized cee’d to the BBC 2 show, where it has replaced the Chevrolet Lacetti as the “Reasonably Priced Car” in which star interviewees attempt to set a fast lap time on the TG track.

The BBC’s mission is, famously, to “inform, educate and entertain”. Top Gear certainly entertains more than just about anything else on TV, making it one of the Corporation’s best shows, and one that has appeal far beyond the ranks of the hard-core car enthusiasts at which it was originally aimed.

However, TG doesn’t really do much to inform and educate its audience about motoring subjects, which means that one of the most significant trends of recent years – the rise of budget brands such as Skoda, Kia and Hyundai with excellent products that can look the established western European and Japanese competition in the eye – has really passed the programme by. This isn’t really Top Gear’s fault; too many serious topics would ruin its distinctive appeal. But it does perhaps highlight the need for the BBC to introduce a more serious companion motoring show to TG if it is to fulfil its mission as a public service broadcaster properly.

While Kia will get plenty of exposure as a result of the new arrangement, providing its cars to Top Gear also has its risks. The previous Reasonably Priced Cars, the Suzuki Liana and the Chevy Lacetti, were the butt of a great deal of (admittedly fairly good-natured) humour on the show; they were perfectly adequate cars, but in the UK market, they were also-rans. The cee’d, while certainly very reasonably priced, is a completely different proposition – a serious, fully-fledged competitor for the best cars in its class, albeit one with a badge with which many British buyers are still unfamiliar. The danger is that the cee’d may come to be bracketed in TG viewers’ minds with its predecessors as a slightly naff, cheapo product, rather than getting the respect and recognition it deserves.

The Reasonably Priced Car slot probably works best for a manufacturer that normally has so little exposure or enjoys such an undistinguished reputation that having its products gently made fun of every week on TV is a plus. That may apply to, say, Proton or Ssangyong, or even the pre-cee’d Kia. But these days the company has probably moved beyond the “all publicity is good publicity” stage in building its brand in the UK – and the cee’d, in particular, certainly needs the right kind of exposure, rather than just any old exposure, if its fine qualities are to be conveyed appropriately to potential buyers. The first Top Gear featuring the cee’d wasn’t very encouraging from that perspective.

Still, if nothing else, Kia’s competent mid-ranger is bound to set far better lap times than the Liana and the Lacetti in the long run, which will help a bit.

Recent Feedback

There are many reasons why our customers choose Griffin Mill, here’s a recent testimonial we received:

Dear Mr Griffin,

I am sorry but I cannot recall the names of the ladies of the reception section I spoke with, however on the original visit at about 8.30am on Wednesday the 9 June the staff member held the position nearest the entrance. On my return at about 4.00pm of the same day I met with a younger lady whose position was at right angles to the staff member I met in the morning. I did not notice any formal staff identification displayed.

I purchased my first new vehicle in 1960 when it was the time the Salesman would visit one’s home with the car, this happened also in 1962 when I purchased a ‘Cortina’ at this time I was also taken out for lunch … Times have changed and the ‘Sportage’ is likely to be the last of the fifteen new vehicles purchased from 1960.

With regard to the purchase of my ‘Sportage’ August 2007 I can say that my dealings with Mr. Fitzgerald (Sales) could not be faulted – here was a gentleman with the traditional skill of simple customer care paramount in his dealing.

It is good to see your company has not lost the real philosophy of traditional service.

Yours sincerely

Howard J. John (Mr)
